The Three Gunas
the Three modes of universal nature.
Humanity and the Creation is said to be a
composite of three prime qualities which are sattva, rajas and tamas.
- Sattva is the power of harmony, balance,
light and intelligence – the higher or spiritual potential.
- Rajas is the power of energy, action,
change and movement – the intermediate or life potential.
- Tamas is the power of darkness, inertia,
form and materiality – the lower or material potential.
Perhaps the simplest way to understand the
gunas for the modern mind is as matter (tamas), energy (rajas) and
love/intelligence/spirituality (sattva), the main factors of our physical
universe.
INFLUENCE OF THE THREE GUNAS UPON HUMAN
BEHAVIOR THROUGH THE SEVEN CHAKRAS.
|
TAMAS: |
Aversion,
ignorance, inertia, dullness. |
|
RAJAS: |
Desire,
lust, excitement, movement, mania. |
|
SATTVA: |
Balance,
rhythm, intelligence, unity, harmony, and spirituality. |
The proportion of gunas within our system
is dependent upon our holistic diet - the input into our system through each
chakra. For self development and spiritual purposes we aim for a
holistically sattvic diet. The influence of the gunas upon the chakras
produces our holistic behavior.
The two primary ways in which our chakras
are influenced by the gunas are:
-
Food and diet.
- The way we think.
